The Season of Lent

Published: 2023-02-21

You may be wondering what this season is all about. In the Gospels, we are told that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness where, for forty days, Jesus fasted, and was tempted by the devil. During the six-week, forty day Season of Lent we follow Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, into a forty day season of fasting. Fasting can involve giving up meals one day a week; but it can also involve stepping away from addictive habits such as smartphones and social media, or weeding out bad habits in our lives that are not pleasing to God, such as complaining or speaking negatively of others. Lent, which means “lengthening of days” is a Springtime season of planting new godly habits in our lives, like seeds that will germinate, grow and bear spiritual fruit. You may want to add into your daily morning time with God a five-minute time of silent adoration of our Lord, or time to memorize a passage of the Bible. Lent leads us into Holy Week, to Good Friday, and to the joyful celebration of Easter and our Lord’s resurrection.
